Airbnb Room had Bedbugs and I got Fined

I stayed at an Airbnb in New Orleans and woke up to find find dead bedbugs and casings in the box spring. The host responded by wiping away the evidence and threatening to come after me for damages if I told anyone. I sent photos of the bedbugs and audio tape I had taken of her admitting there were no damages.

As part of the claim she ended up filing against me, which included a $75 fee for putting the mattress back on the bed (which I had even offered to do for her), she submitted a clearly falsified letter from a fake exterminator, which Airbnb even admitted to me they knew was fake. Somehow they still charged me $75.

Can you imagine going to a hotel, complaining that you found bedbug remnants, and having them respond by falsifying documents, attacking you, and then fining you? This company has zero customer service.

  1. In my hotel room where I checked in after 5 nights suddenly one evening i found three itchy bites on my shoulder. On inspection i found a dead bed bug (it’s body dry and 2 pieces) in a corner of my hotel room. I immediately changed to another room one level lower. I am scared i might have a bed bug in my bag or suitcase. I read your tip about leaving your bags outside your house. But I live in a small apartment in a building complex so I don’t know where I should keep them. Can I put my entire bags in plastic bags and spray from top first and carefully open the bags inside the plastic bag so that the bugs can’t escape? I have used rubbing alcohol to spray and kill bed bugs in the past. What would you spray them with?

Right, so why are you staying at Airbnb’s and not a hotel? You just laid out a great reason to stay at hotels, and yet you continue to stay with Airbnb’s. and then complain, and then say things like ” Can you imagine going to a hotel?” Odd.

  3. Either the room had bedbugs or it didn’t. This story doesn’t make sense. If all dead, there was treatment done in the room at some point. Otherwise, you tore apart someone’s bedroom to find anything that created this conflict in spite of not finding anything alive that would warrant such behavior or action.

    I Find your motives suspect.

    • I think maybe I didn’t fully describe the experience. I woke up with what seemed to be a bed bug bite, and so I inspected the bed and found clear signs of bed bugs. I didn’t find any live bugs, but that could just mean it was a small infestation, that was just beginning. Any signs of beg bugs, for anyone that has had them, is terrifying, since all it takes is one egg to get on you and you can end up bringing them with you. Just imagine someone came to your house and said, can I sleep here tonight, last night I stayed in a bed that might have bed bugs, I”m not sure.

  4. Dispute the charge with your credit card company. Alas, Airbnb is teeming with greedy, dishonest hosts…..
