Criminal Conviction Ten Years Ago and Still Being Punished

I’m going to try and make this short and detailed. Over 10 years ago I was convicted of a felony. I was sentenced and completed the sentence. Since then, I have become a productive member of society, and have started a family. My life today is a complete 180 from where it was 10 years ago.

I recently went on a business trip. My company usually uses Airbnb but we have to use our own account to get reimbursed. This is my first time traveling for this company so I have never used Airbnb before. I went on the app, searched for the perfect spot for three nights and then signed up and completed the reservation. After that I got an email asking for my photo ID, which I sent rather quickly. It seemed like everything was fine.

A day before I was scheduled to leave town and arrive at the host’s place, I got an email stating my account had been permanently deactivated and my reservation cancelled and refunded. Now I was in a bit of a predicament. Sure, my company knows about my criminal history but I still had to contact a supervisor and get approval to use a different OTA to book a hotel. I don’t know who within the company knows about my criminal history, but I know that the supervisor I had to contact did not. The revelation did not sit well with him, but that’s another story.

The embarrassment of having to tell someone (a coworker) I couldn’t use Airbnb was devastating. I find it ridiculous that they can do this. I completely understand that the “hosts” are sometimes renting out their own homes and there is a certain risk that comes with this. But if Airbnb actually did research when a questionable background check presented itself, they would see that they are punishing some people beyond what they should be.

On My Way to Arbitration After Airbnb Assault

I was an Airbnb host for several years. In December, I was assaulted by Airbnb guests from Canada overstaying at my rental home. I called 911, and police officers photographed my injuries at the station. My Airbnb account was closed, and the reservations were canceled.

The guest contacted me via text message about my account being closed before Airbnb sent me an email deactivating my account. I was coping with my husband’s loss and to be attacked inside of my own home was very difficult for me. Airbnb indicated that they would open a claim for my property damage loss. To this date, no such claim has been opened.

The sheriff’s investigator contacted Airbnb’s Law Enforcement Department, who refused her request for the guests’ identity. She indicated that she attempted to search for the guest’s name using department resources and did not get a return. She noted that the Airbnb guests used false information to make the booking.

Airbnb denied me the right to seek justice with my claim by refusing to provide the guests’ identity to law enforcement, who would have conducted a proper investigation. It seems Airbnb was afraid of an impartial third-party investigation. I am on my way to arbitration, and you will hear about this matter in the press very soon.

Airbnb Denied My Claim With No Explanation

I am a Superhost who has provided Airbnb with dozens of stays since January. A recent guest completely trashed our place. I have photos of destroyed blankets, towels, electric mattress pad, and cigars. Our house reeked of cigar smoke despite our clear and strict no smoking policy. Our carpets and mattresses required additional professional cleaning and many items needed to be replaced.

After immediately filing a complaint the day she checked out, I never heard from the guest or Airbnb. Many phone calls later, I finally received a message from Airbnb stating my claim was denied and that their decision was final, with no further explanation. What is the point of clearly establishing house rules and taking a damage deposit if Airbnb has no intention of protecting the hosts from damage?

Airbnb Host Unfair to Same-Sex Couples?

I recently requested and booked a one-night stay at a place in Anaheim. I messaged the host asking if he could accommodate me and my girlfriend for April 15th and check out on the 16th, to which his response the next morning after was an apology, stating it was two nights minimum. This was false. On his profile of the guest suite, it states one night minimum.

I’ve read plenty of reviews from other guests who were able to book a one-night stay at his place with no problems. I feel like this host is BSing and don’t want to host a lesbian couple.

The next morning, I looked at his listing and the 16th was booked. That was only one night. I called Airbnb’s specialist team and also messaged them the complaint. I am waiting to hear back from the case manager. This frustrates me because I have good reviews on my end and no reports of being a bad guest.
