Airbnb Founders Should be Ashamed of Themselves

Firstly I’d like to say Airbnb has falsely pushed up rental prices all over the world. This first came to light when I joined Airbnb as a host. I know the average rent in Hua Hin, Thailand. As soon as I joined as a host I was told I could get much more in rentals for my condo.

They’ve tried to push up rentals all over the world. People in Thailand are generally poor. A good monthly wage is seen as $400.

I took over management of my friend’s Airbnb account. I received a booking for 1500 Baht (about 40 USD) but I could not get a cleaner so I emailed the customer and asked if he minded if I canceled because of this issue. He understood and we agreed to cancel. I pressed cancel. I received a fine from Airbnb for 3121.08 Baht because I canceled. This is theft and breaking international contract law.

  1. Brian, it’s hardly a big deal helping a friend out and most people don’t have time to get a BA degree in Airbnb. The fact is they broke contract law and it’s theft. That fine for someone in a poor country like Thailand is completely inappropriate so get off your high horses.

  3. Sadly there are a number of companies around the world that are arrogant, greedy, or abuse their market position/dominance. Airbnb is certainly up there amongst them. But lets not forget the drug companies who see no reason not to increase prices for certain essential medication by 4000% or more, just because “they can”

We are getting into times when this is becoming the norm. As consumers, our only option is decline purchases or services from these outfits wherever possible.

  4. You have no business managing your friend’s Airbnb listing if you haven’t read and understood Airbnb’s terms of service. You have no business managing a short term rental if you can’t “get a cleaner”.

To avoid the cancellation penalty, you should’ve had the guest cancel or called Airbnb to ask for a mutual cancellation.

  5. “Airbnb is estimated to be worth about $38 billion, according to what a source close to the company told Vox in March 2019 and what Forbes estimated in March 2018.Sep 19, 2019. “
I find it very unlikely that Air bob is going to go bust.

  6. If you are in business then you should understand the consequences of what you are doing/ Is it Airbnb’s fault you cannot organise a cleaner?
