Ripped off by a host and Airbnb didn’t protect me

Posted on August 21, 2019

We arrived late on Friday after a four-hour drive. The host arrived an hour after check-in and presented a rental and waiver agreement I had to sign. The host said, and I quote: “My son is a lawyer and you have to sign this so we can sue you directly if you damage our place.”

I had two options: sign, or leave without a refund. The host called the police to evict us because I was not prepared to sign the ridiculous agreement. Airbnb refused to refund me and I had no choice than to close my account after three years as a host, Superhost, and guest.

Airbnb Terminated Account Based on Guest Complaint

Posted on August 1, 2017

I have been an Airbnb host for more than four years and in two countries. My review history ranged between 4-4.5 stars. Generally speaking I received lower ratings from those nitpicky guests this very website warns you about and great ratings form seasoned travellers who appreciate our friendly approach and willingness to assist guests with any reasonable requests for queries.

Last month we got this quiet, serious American girl with her two study mates. She had just signed up for Airbnb in March this year. I was their first booking. They wanted to stay for almost 1.5 months. Although I earn much better to rent to short term guests, I agreed to host them and even give them a discount, as it seemed they were nice people.

That was the wrong inclination. Firstly we discovered that although going to uni and studying aerospace engineering and nuclear physics (which they claimed to be their majors) doesn’t mean people know that one doesn’t hang wet laundry all over their host’s wooden furniture. Surely they wouldn’t do that at mum’s place? When we kindly asked them to hang it outside (we live in a country with daily sunshine and stuff dries in a blink of an eye) we were sneered at and ignored until reminded the second time.

For more than 40 days we lived under the same roof, yet they couldn’t muster more than a hello, which was usually initiated by us and they just politely answered to. Then they were gone. The place was filthy and some household items (hangers, plug adapters) were missing. We got a phone call from Airbnb that stated we were being terminated. No explanation was given and no one cared that our guests were filthy, and stole from us. This can’t be real.

Since I have discovered in life that (a German proverb says: “Recht haben und Recht bekommen sind zwei verschiedene Dinge”, i.e. “To be in the right and to be done justice are two different things”) I have now followed Kelly Kampen and opened 9Flats.com and Flipkey accounts. I will be actively promoting these in any way possible.

Go to hell, Airbnb. No one needs you. You are pretentious and unfair and outright biased, racist, etc. There will be other competitors. Let’s open the market to more competitors.

Airbnb Closed my Account without Cause

Posted on August 2, 2016

I was a member since 2010 with positive reviews from hosts. Last year after being continually cyberstalked by numerous entertainers, their online followers began to harass me through various sites. They started to mess with the hosts on Airbnb and I was struggling to know who to trust to rent. I asked this company if they could bother to protect its users by setting up a private option for guests and hosts to keep their profile pages private. They refused and I began to get cyberstalked. Last year I got one host and these entertainers who messed with me. I made a complaint to Airbnb demanding to know who was behind this; their response was to block my account and refuse to let me rent from hosts that were keen to rent to me.

They ruined my trip last year and my life in general, as I couldn’t find other accommodations and had to come back home. Then my second pre-booked rental was canceled by Airbnb and I struggled once again, which also affected me at university. I had some brilliant hosts but on other occasions I had to deal with: guests’ friends having violent sex in the other room; being bullied at a dorm where I dealt with disturbed staff; one host who only allowed me to sleep there at night and then leave; another host who tried to rip me off twice; and the last one ruined my life by causing Airbnb to cancel my reservations.

They used to be helpful up until these followers not affiliated with Airbnb got involved and wrecked my entire life. What happened as a consequence to them canceling my reservation last year is I’m still struggling to find a home now. Their customer support is terrible and an embarrassment. I found out later that several individuals had been stalking me through Airbnb and with the companies knowledge. They don’t care about their guests; it’s all about the hosts. If you have anything stolen, they won’t be held responsible. If you get stalked online, they won’t make your profile page private. They recently reopened my account, and when I asked about my password settings and who was behind all my cancelations last year, they closed my account again. I have shown their rules and regulations to my lawyer, and he has agreed I didn’t break any of them to the extent I should have my account closed. They’ve become so popular they just snub the people that built them up.
