Airbnb ‘Guests’ Try to Force Their Way into a Stay

I had a couple try to book my place on Airbnb a day after the previous guests left. They said they were local and seemed desperate — which these days can mean homeless. Then came a bunch of weird stuff about adding guests which confirmed my suspicions. They tried to bypass Airbnb by promising to e-transfer a deposit. Happily they were unable to book as I had a day blocked between bookings.

Unfortunately they found my location on Google and showed up at my place on bicycles that turned out to be stolen. I had to use a baseball bat to make them leave. When they said they would call the police I called their bluff and told them to dial 911. They took off but left some of their stuff. I then called the police and gave them the woman’s first name.

In about ten seconds the officer showed me a picture on his phone and I said it was her. The next night she broke into my house through a window. She and I had another talk about baseball bats and she informed me that they were all going to stay and that that it would take me months to get them out. Back to the baseball bat.

Now here’s the good part. I checked the previous place they had booked on Airbnb and the host posted a review saying “quests were reluctant to move out when stay was over.”

Like an idiot, I decided to warn Airbnb about these slimeballs. I have pictures, case numbers, police reports of the break-in plus details of all the crimes including the stolen IDs left on my property. The moron I spoke to at Airbnb’s farcical parody of a help center immediately told me they had no way of verifying what I was reporting and then insisted on wasting my time by trying to look up the non-existent booking.

I finally got him to admit that they actually had a department that dealt with this and he put me on hold again for ten minutes while he conveyed his version of events. When he came back on the line he told me their security people would not talk to me without a booking reference and that they advised calling the police.

What a bloody waste of time. What an awful place Airbnb has become. I will never call for help again.

Airbnb Employees were my Worst Guests

My bosses owned a five-bedroom house in San Francisco that was soon to be vacant so we came to an agreement that I would live there for free and host on Airbnb, and they would keep the money as rent. They stood to make a couple thousand more a month than if they just rented it out long term.

Everything was going great and I was bringing in on average $12,000/month. For the most part, I screened my guests and they were all great. I had a request from an Airbnb employee in Portland to book all my extra rooms as she and her coworkers had to come to San Francisco for a conference. I figured they were Airbnb employees so they wouldn’t do anything crazy; I booked the stay.

I let the contact person know that the day they were to arrive I would actually be in Napa Valley checking on some properties up there for my bosses, but I would be back the next day. It clearly stated that this was a shared house and that I, the host, live onsite. I arrived at the house in the afternoon of their second day and met the group of girls staying. We chatted a bit as they were getting ready for dinner and I said I was just dropping off my bags and then heading out to meet my friend for a drink. After a couple drinks and catching up with my firmed I returned home and went to bed. The group was still out to dinner.

At 3:00 AM I was woken up by a guy and two girls demanding that I leave. They said they rented the entire house, I was not supposed to be there, and I had to get out. I was disoriented after being woken up from a sound sleep and a bit confused. When I realized what was going on I told them that it clearly states on my listing that I as the host live on site. The kept demanding that I leave immediately. I told them I wasn’t going anywhere. They wouldn’t leave me alone. After arguing for what seemed like an hour, they finally left my room.

The next day when I woke up they were all gone and left with three nights still on their booking. I called Airbnb, explained what had happened, and told them that if they requested a refund that I would not allow it. I also requested that someone from the Portland office call me to discuss their employee’s behavior. The supervisor called back and assured me that these employees would be dealt with.

Do NOT be TOO trusting while being a HOST

MAN and woman stayed overnight. They left early next day. Man came back, said he forgot something. went up to his room , brought down a Firearm ! Do not be TOO trusting. female Dr comes in 10am one morning. I actually made her breakfast..Her room was beautiful 25 x 36, Brass King Bed /2 couches. tv, desk. The night before she was couch surfing to save money, Her room at my place was $59.00! She gave me a bad review because the garbage can was not empty. She is starting a business where she calls old people on the phone to talk and bill their insurance companies. She claims this would prevent dementia. But she did not know what Vinpocetine, or DMAE is. Maybe she is really a vet.
