Two females (wise individuals) booked a villa in Marseille. It looks amazing online, in reality not so much.

We arrived exactly on time. All the doors were open so we entered. A man was standing in the kitchen with his back to us. We said “hello”, and he did not turn around; he simply grunted. We were left to presume he was a guest.

We wandered about on the ground floor. The first thing I saw was the laundry strewn over the balcony with stones on top. When we entered the living room, there was a huge pile of sheets on the sofa. The dining room… once inside you are greeted by several huge paint-splattered speakers, which, of course, were not in the photos.

When we went back towards the kitchen the man scuttled hurriedly upstairs. We stepped into the quite cluttered kitchen where the man had left the remnants of his bread and humus. A somewhat messy smaller room to the side housing floor to ceiling booze, some of which was leaking onto the floor and washing machine with odd pieces of laundry dotting the floor.

Not a great reception at all. What could we do?

I suggested we venture upstairs to find our room and/or the man we just saw. We were one flight up when the man reappeared and blocked our path. He said nothing. I asked: “Are you the host?”

To which he replied, “Are you so and so?”

“Yes,” I said.

He stated, “And you just come upstairs by yourself?” very aggressively.

“You just walked right past us,” I stated.

“I thought you were friends of my other guests who are English. Why didn’t you call me? I gave you my number.”

He never gave us his number (Why would we call him? He was right there). He was not forthcoming with any information prior to our arrival. I had asked how we would enter the villa and who would be there at what times. His reply? “Don’t worry, all the taxis know it.” I put that down to the language barrier.

We did not know how to get in until we got there at 6:00 PM. I should explain that this was a villa quite high up, not at ground level and not so obvious. We found the gate and his name and pressed the buzzer twice, so I really don’t understand how he did not know who we were. We presumed he had buzzed us in but we learnt later the gate was always open.

He showed us to our room, presentable enough at first glance. He left to fetch towels and keys. He offered to show us the kitchen. I replied I had already seen it. The atmosphere inside the villa was eerie and there was no sign of any other guests despite his earlier excuse for ignoring us. My friend went downstairs with him to be shown the washing machine. I checked out the bathroom.

The closet/wardrobe had been freshly painted so that couldn’t be used due to the smell. Behind the toilet were exposed wires where someone had done a very poor DIY light above the bathroom mirror job. The taps on the sink and in the shower were not clean. The shower had a pebble bottom and several of these were missing, showing age and wear.

This led me to look under the bed and sure enough, it was full of dust and tissues. The bed seemed okay. I pulled back the duvet to reveal a crumpled bottom sheet. I did the smell test; they smelt neither clean nor dirty. My friend returned and informed me the host had left, leaving the glass of wine he was drinking balancing on the garden wall.

On further inspection of the towels he had handed us we realized they were in fact wet. We now also noticed the painting above the bed (not shown in the photos) of a female wearing a white basque which was revealing her pubic hair. Also above the bed at head level was a metal lever sticking out of the wall, for gas, water? Definitely a hazard.

We hadn’t eaten all day so left to get a pizza nearby unsure of what we were going to do. This is when we noticed the opaque glass panel in the bedroom door which had two more see through circle sections and a further two scratched out spots which viewed the bed – our bed. Immediately to our left we saw a cupboard with a pair of scissors for a handle.

As if all that wasn’t enough there was no lock on the inside of the room. My friend told me that on her previous visit downstairs she had noticed a room with an open door which couldn’t be a guest room; she described an absolute sty with clothes and objects all over the floor. This door was closed now.

In the entrance way we noticed a vase which had been smashed to bits and glued back together. All the plants from the photos were now covering the kitchen table, dead. The host had left a cupboard open and plates balancing on the sink. The fridge was completely full – no room for us.

On arrival we had noticed an animal hutch in front of the main door – again, not photographed not mentioned. On our way out we noticed the two fluffy baby bunny rabbits. This did not reassure us. We also saw a plastic container containing dirty drinking glasses, many glasses just a step up from the front door; it had been there a while by the looks of it.

We got our pizza and returned. We ate outside as we did not feel comfortable inside. Turned out we were not comfortable outside either; we were completely on edge. We went to put the unfinished pizza in the bin which is when we saw the man’s jumper and empty cleaning fluid bottle in the bin and I mean that was all that was in the bin.

We immediately entered what is known as fight or flight mode. We didn’t know where he was. He could have returned when we were at the pizza place. I volunteered to go back upstairs and gather our belongings. My friend stood guard at the front door. We locked the kitchen door he had left open, returned the keys to the room, shut the self locking front door behind us, and made our way down the creepy stone steps to our escape.

With no phone (my friend had issues with providers abroad), and no access to internet we were forced to return to the city (a 30-minute bus ride) and find a hotel. Luckily my friend had funds on her card to do this. With help from several members of the public and their phones we finally found our way to an Ibis, our salvation.

We were quite shaken up by the time we got to the hotel after 9:00 PM. The staff were amazing; they gave us a discount because of our ordeal, talked to us, and listened to us. The restaurant served us apple pie with ice cream, just what we needed after our ordeal.

We contacted Airbnb as soon as it was possible and for me that was before I had even returned home. We actually wrote a four-page report, and sent photos that I even in my nervous state had the foresight to take. We sent the hotel receipt. Two weeks of the email game reliving that night over and over again to be told “No, the host won t refund and you didn’t follow procedure.”

I mean, it’s not real, right? You’re emailing some minimum wage person whose first language is not English who is trained to say no. There are no supervisors or managers. My friend emailed the CEO’s top dogs; I don’t believe they exist. For all we know it could literally be a 15-year-old in his bedroom. This is not a real company at all; it’s a sham. Appalling not just for us but this so called host is allowed to carry on. What about when two females not of our age and maturity book a property? It is not safe.

You can’t get anywhere with Airbnb directly; it’s just not designed that way. They have to be publicly outed and shamed and I would call for them to be shut down or boycotted so they just dissolve.

This was my first and only experience with this cowboy outfit. Thank goodness we had only used it for two nights of our six-night break. We stayed with Ibis Hotels for the other nights and they were fantastic in every way. My friend has already contacted TV stations in the UK. Airbnb has to be brought to justice.

I’m totally outraged. It was a total disaster my first time using Airbnb and it will definitely be my last. It was absolutely horrible and a traumatic experience. I have never witnessed anything like this before in my whole life. My guest and I were left stranded and homeless without our belongings because we trusted Airbnb to provide us with a property. We came back to the apartment rented to us which the host didn’t even show up at himself; we were let at the beginning by the neighbour who gave us one key and left us to it.

We stayed with no covers. I had a cold night. There were no pillows for the sofa. I slept in my T-shirt because I wasn’t comfortable laying my head on the sofa. The next day the shower water was freezing cold for some reason and we had small towels. I continued my day and returned from a festival. My mate and I only took out part of our money so that we didn’t spend it all as it got low.

We returned home to see the locks had been changed. We called the host and he sent his neighbour. The neighbour eventually came to me in a panic because he came a hour and a half after the call. He tried the key; it didn’t work. He told us to call the police; now the language barrier was bad. It was impossible for me to communicate through the phone to the police. I told him to call the police and he did.

He disappeared and the police arrived. He came back and told them the locks had been changed. We were told by the police the property was being squatted and our property had been closed by a judge. This was hours after literally being left without an idea or a clue as to what was actually happening. I was literally crying, having an anxiety attack, and felt defenseless to the situation out in the cold, tired.

My phone died. The police said they had to leave us. We were able to charge my phone up to 15% through the police car. Eventually the police said they had to go and I should go to the police station tomorrow. At this time I had no money, no clothes, no place to stay, and a low battery. Someone who had another property in the building offered to charge my phone and gave me their phone to make calls to Airbnb.

Airbnb kept saying they were going to get back to me within a hour. I called every hour and I was strung along until the early hours of the morning. The Spanish guy then offered to pay our cab to a friend who had woke up at 8:30 but said we couldn’t come to the property until later because he was staying with his mates and she wasn’t awake yet.

I called Airbnb back; they continued to say they were working on the situation. They then said I should go and get breakfast. Bear in mind we had no money. I explained this and was told basically to try make something happen. It wasn’t until later I managed to get my phone charged a little in order to get some money sent over and also borrow some money off my friend on holiday which wasn’t really suitable for the duration of our holiday but we made it stretch.

We had to buy temporary clothing and had nowhere to shower. That day Airbnb offered another room using the amount we used to make payment. They wouldn’t help us. We already felt let down by Airbnb and felt like they couldn’t be trusted. We declined their offer after choosing to pay a mate 150 euros each, in which I had to pay to my mate.

When I returned back to the UK because of not having any cash, Airbnb refunded the money. Up until then, the money had not come back so we couldn’t use it to get another room. We were doomed but certain that Airbnb was not going to help us locate as safe a place as the ones we could see. We didn’t want to witness any more madness than we already had. I was tired, stressed, and depressed.

I have severe depression and have been going to the doctors to get medical help. This trip was meant to be a break for me as I’ve been going through loads of things recently and have been feeling like harming myself. Feeling down and drained from this situation has made it far worse; I feel as if I’m cursed. The feeling and the things I went through out in Barcelona was a struggle I could have never imagined. The valuables I’ve lost were very expensive belongings.

The things that I can remember I’ve listed. I’m sure I forgot some things. We packed for a good time, a relaxing break away from the drama, and landed into drama the next day. I had to go to the police station in my old clothes smelling with not a lot of money for travel. I spent the majority of the day on my feet aching. I drove back home. This is the most walking I have done in ages.

Having to try to translate people for help, I got told to go to court. I have called Airbnb for assistance at least 30 times but wasn’t getting any calls back from either the case manager or host. It was horrible to know that I was out there and the company never took my case seriously enough to have my holiday recovered whilst I was out in Barcelona. I spent my whole holiday trying to recover my belongings calling Airbnb and finding ways to charge my phone.

I never managed to get to court until Saturday after many enquiries as to where my property was. I phoned Airbnb for help urgently to sort something. I explained about my flight being on Saturday; they didn’t even contact me to see if I was okay. My tablet for my mental state on the flight was in my bag I was so scared to fly. My friend had to buy me water, reassure me, hold my back, and give me a sick bag because I was panicking so much.

It was a terrible experience, one which I wanted to avoid because people were looking at me like I was crazy, like I didn’t go through enough already. I cried on the way to the airport knowing I had to travel without my belongings. I had taken my tablet for that reason. I was so worried and stunned that no one could even help. My work phone was left on the property with my contacts. I was meant to be in contact with them but I hadn’t had the means.

I’m still trying to get my belongings back. I only got through to someone yesterday, the first call I’ve actually had from Airbnb to try get a resolution. We weren’t safeguarded by this company; we were mistreated and no citizen should have to go through something like that in any country when paying for a service.

They have told me they cannot contact the court which has my stuff. I’ve had to find someone Spanish to try communicate for me. I’ve had to ring a number of Spanish numbers and Airbnb so many times my bill must be sky high. I’ve had this woman trying so hard to get my belongings back because Airbnb has opted that they can not speak to the courts. Why is beyond me – this is about a property we rented through Airbnb with our expensive belongings.

I would really like something to be done about this. In no way is this acceptable at all. If not, I’ll have to take my enquiries further. I have also asked for all conversations from June 14th until now be emailed to me. So far I’ve only received one and I’ve asked so many times. I’ve been told so many times I will get them all but never got anything.

I would like to be compensated for my stuff if it cannot be recovered. I would like to be compensated for my trip also as it was meant to be a break and we were not supported by Airbnb. We put our trust in them, thinking they were a trustworthy company. We want all our belongings and money back and our trip to be compensated which I think is fair after the mayhem we had to go through (what happened and what I sent to Airbnb).

I have a case manager who was meant to help me and understand that this is no way fair or a normal situation. He asked me to do the work in contacting the courts because he refused to talk to legal teams. I had to find a translator in the UK to speak to the Spanish judge who instructed me that this property has had massive problems and issues for a while and Airbnb should not be advertising it on their website. She instructed me to take it up with Airbnb who are now not responding.

They asked for this in writing, which I provided to them. Now they have said they cannot contact me until further notice, which I think is insane. I asked for all my information through my case manager. It been a week. I’ve been contacting Airbnb and they haven’t got back to me. My phone bill this month has gone from £50 to £181 as a result of all the calls I’ve made in attempts to resolve this. I’m fuming.

Last weekend my girlfriends and I rented a super pimped out, amazing three-bedroom house near old Montreal. We’re talking high roller kind of place… after all, it was my bachelorette party, so we figured we would splurge a bit. The reviews were great, the host was nice, and the place was amazing. Everything was great until we got home at 3:00 AM on Saturday night to find everything ransacked, and all our stuff stolen. Not just a few things, but a lot of things: $20,000 worth of iPads, diamonds, purses, sunglasses… all gone. They even took one of my wedding shoes. That’s right, just one.

After dealing with the police, filing a report, doing all the things we had to do we were finally able to contact the host. He came the next morning, and as he was inspecting the place he told me that someone had rented his place a few weeks ago, under a false name and stolen credit card, and stole a bunch of his stuff. Why didn’t he tell us that before? The buggers probably copied the key to the place and just came back a few weeks later.

Which leads me to ask: how safe is Airbnb? Keys can be easily copied. A quick trip to a convenience store or home depot – that’s all it takes. You can’t tell me that every host changes their locks after every guest. I’m guessing that doesn’t happen. So really, how safe are you sleeping in a house that could have hundreds of copied keys to the front door? We were just lucky that none of us stayed in that night. The night prior, one of my girlfriends stayed in. If they came in on Friday things could have been much worse. All of this tell us Airbnb is not safe unless the host has a pin pad lock and changes the code after ever guest. Always ask, and really it should be mandatory by Airbnb. By the way, none of the host’s stuff was stolen, not a thing.

Here is my mom’s and my family recent Airbnb bad experience in London and we didn’t even end up staying at the property!!! This is our letter to Airbnb Corporate. “Dear Airbnb, I am writing this letter to file a formal safety complaint against the Airbnb listed property: 1 Court Street, London, E1 United Kingdom. My family of 4 and I had a reservation for the property for 4 nights (June 17-June 21st 2015). I booked the property because the pictures looked nice and clean and it stated it was fairly close to the Tower of London. This was also an expensive property, totaling at $889 for 4 nights. Never being to London before, I did not know what areas of London were nice and safe and was trusting Airbnb and the Host that the area the property was in was going to be safe. When my family got out of the tube station (Whitechapel), we quickly realized that this was not a family friendly and safe area at all. We walked down to where the property and realized that there was no way we could stay there and feel safe. The apartment was down an alley way that was having construction done. The area was extremely noisy and crowded. The property in London was in the middle of a street marketplace. It would be very noisy and difficult to move in and out of the property. The whole purpose of getting a property via Airbnb was to get a “family friendly” property, not sleep in a high crime street marketplace. I did text the owner saying that an emergency had popped up. I cannot believe that he never called or responded back to us. Due to this, it completely disturbed our whole London trip. Since it was last minute, we could not find any reasonable accommodations in London and ended up having to travel to south England to my daughter’s apartment in Bournemouth, England. My husband and son had been very sick for days and needed to be in a safe and comfortable environment. They also needed to see a doctor the day we arrived. They had to travel to Bournemouth to see a doctor and ended up having to go to the hospital. We can provide documentation from the hospital if necessary. Later, I researched the Whitechapel area in London and found out that it is one of the top violent and sexual crime hotspots according to the LessCrime Report ( http://lesscrime.info/londons-violent-crime-hotspots/). I also looked at the official London Police website and found out that each month this specific area has one of the highest number of incidents and crimes in all of London (http://www.police.uk/metropolitan/00BGGN/crime/). I am very upset and disappointed with fact that Airbnb allowed this property to be listed. Airbnb should have a description of the local area. Airbnb needs to send someone to check the property out personally and they will see for themselves the security concern. My daughter used Airbnb several times across Europe to travel and recommended this to me. She had no safety concerns or major issues at the properties that she stayed at. We also had a bad experience with an Airbnb property in Paris. After this horrible experience that messed up our entire London trip and we paid the whole 889$!, I do not believe that I will ever use Airbnb again. Know that I will be sending this letter to every corporate Airbnb email I can find, will share it on many social media sites, and will make sure that none of my family and friends use Airbnb. I do believe that we should receive a refund because we booked the property under false pretenses and we did not stay at the property at all. I do not want what happened to my family to happen to another. Please send someone to this property or have it removed from your site so that this never happens to another family.
