Big cities have crime, even “safe” neighborhoods (which is all relative to your experience anyways).
I am sorry you had that experience, it’s bad enough when it happens but to mess up your vacation sucks!
Most tourists get pickpockets from the pro’s (an actual career in large cities), not broken into.
The host should have tried to assist you and helped with navigating their police system (other country’s police are NOT like USA systems), or a bit of translation assistance.
