It sounds like unfortunately you didn’t read how Airbnb works before bookings.
Hosts are not allowed ask guests for deposits outside of Airbnb.
They can only ask Airbnb to hold this against your card. And if they want to make a claim they need to do so through Airbnb.
Asking for a deposit outside of Airbnb is a huge red flag.
I would suggest you call Airbnb and tell them what has happened and report this host by flagging their profile.
What sort of reviews did this host have? I hope you left them an honest review of your experience to help warn other guests.
