Our reservation was not until December, so I can’t believe 48 hours was not reasonable.

In my opinion, once you send your money, you will never see it again. I have the impression AirBnB is aware of this, but could care less, they collect their fee. This seems to be a money making scheme for dodgy people who have learned they do not have to give a refund.
