I recently had a bad experience as an air bnb guest myself which should soon be posted here. In my case, I acted immediately, within a few hours of check in. Of course that completely disrupted my plans for my trip, with airbnb seeming to expect me to be at their beck and call to immediately provide photo documentation and sending me surveys asking how their people had done their jobs. Air bnb did refund all my money, and gave me $100 towards my hotel bill for the first night (less than half what it actually cost). Mysteriously, the negative review I wrote has not been posted by airbnb. Had they actually posted it, I would consider using them again, thinking I just got a bad apple, and next time could be more careful about which host I pick ( even though the host I chose has impecable reviews and seems to be raking in the money on her rented apartment). But in reading about other people's experiences, I see that Airbnb stacks the deck against guests trying to make an informed decision about who to give their money to (and possibly their safety) and effectively colludes with hosts who lie. I won't be using Airbnb again even though they made good on the financial end of the bargain. The emotional cost of not knowing where I would spend the night and the disruption to my trip cannot be compensated.
