Clearly, the house is older and that cubby served a purpose at one point. I doubt the guy bought the house, carved a common feature of old homes into a wall, all for the purpose of spying on you or creeping in to harm you. Your paranoia isn’t his fault. As to the “filth”…. The shower is a little gross. But, the cat issue is your issue. He disclosed that he has pets in the listing and you knew they were house cats. Knowing that, and having a friend with allergies, why did you book this place? He probably did clean as much as possible. However, cat hair is tough to remove AND it’s nearly impossible to rid the cat saliva (which contains the allergen) ffom furnishings.
