I have been staying in a few properties here in AirBnb Bangkok. On the listing page they will not mention that. And, when you make the payment online and complete the transaction, you will find a message from the host (the checkout message) stating, you need to pay 3000-4000 THB deposit and also pay for electricity and utilities. This is a total SCAM here with AirBnb Thailand (Bangkok and Pattaya especially). My best advice, message the host before making the payment online and ask them if there are additional costs or security deposits attached with you stay. And, if they say No, then take a screenshot of that message. You may need to send it to AirBnb resolution support, in case your Thai AirBnb host starts acting funny and makes your AirBnb stay in Thailand a Living Hell!! And yeah, most of these listings here in Thailand have a Co-Host attached to the property listing. The one which I am staying currently, the main host has never reached out to me during my stay and my Co-Host hardly replies to my Line messages. Talking about second class treatment during your AirBnb stay here in Thailand :)

It depends on information held in listing. Many hosts in markets such as Palm Springs, California must collect taxes in person, separate from website fees. Does that make it a scam? No. It is a failure within the platform. Quit judging, although that is what AirBnB Hell is aboutnof course, people’s uneducated judgements.

It is a scam—the host chose to list on Airbnb and accepted the Airbnb terms of service that states all payments to the host should be through the platform. Regardless of culture the host violated the terms of service.

This is a cultural/business norm in Thailand and at odds with western online platforms. Hosts should define policies within the Listing.

Where you are wrong here is in calling the procedure a “scam”. It is not necessarily so.
