Brian, it’s hardly a big deal helping a friend out and most people don’t have time to get a BA degree in Airbnb. The fact is they broke contract law and it’s theft.That fine for someone in a poor country like Thailand is completely inappropriate so get off your high horses.

Sadly there are a number of companies around the world that are arrogant, greedy, or abuse their market position/dominance. Airbnb is certainly up there amongst them. But lets not forget the drug companies who see no reason not to increase prices for certain essential medication by 4000% or more, just because “they can”

We are getting into times when this is becoming the norm. As consumers, our only option is decline purchases or services from these outfits wherever possible.

You have no business managing your friend’s Airbnb listing if you haven’t read and understood Airbnb’s terms of service. You have no business managing a short term rental if you can’t “get a cleaner”.

To avoid the cancellation penalty, you should’ve had the guest cancel or called Airbnb to ask for a mutual cancellation.
