Airbnb Service the Last Two Years has Gotten Very Bad

I am a long time Airbnb user and for the past two years the quality of service with Airbnb has gone completely downhill. I have many experiences to share.

Since March 2021, the quality of hosts’ service has gotten very bad and at the same time Airbnb has raised its service fees and rental rates. I have stayed in several Airbnbs where the linens weren’t washed and the hosts had ample time to wash the linens or could have used a different set of linens. I was still charged a cleaning fee. One host refused to provide a space heater (she kept the thermostat at 65 degrees F) in the winter time when the temps got below freezing that night. I told her I have a disability and my muscles lock up when they are cold. She got very angry when I told her that.

Another host turned off the heat when the temp that night was 32 degrees and the space heater they provided was over 20 years old (I saw the manufacture date on the sticker). It broke during the night and I woke up frozen stiff. I asked them earlier that evening if they could turn the heat up because the house was too cold for me but they refused and wouldn’t spend the $1 or $2 or $3 for that one night on their heating bill.

When I started using Airbnb, the service I got for the value was top notch. I rarely had issues like the ones I have been having over the past two years. If I did they were isolated incidents, but now it’s a pattern. I have to say for the record I am very grateful to Airbnb because I have a disability and I struggled a lot to live independently (I lived with my parents most of my life) because I couldn’t find quality affordable rooms to rent and apartments that was not moldy or smokey, that wasn’t in a basement and were the neighbors were quiet and not smoking.

Airbnb has helped me with my independence but since March 2021 I feel I have been scammed multiple time by paying higher rental rates than other tenants, and been scammed into paying cleaning fees for unclean rooms and linens. I have been denied a lot of bookings in the past year and a half too, something that very rarely happened to me before March 2021. I definitely feel taken advantage of because of my disability. I have more stories to share and I will be sharing them in the future.

Airbnb failed to pay over $4000 in cleaning fees

Hi, I have been a host since the first year of airbnb. It has been a positive experience.. until this discovery. The original info sheet from airbnb is not translatable(,so I suspect many have not discovered this.) My friend, a fellow host created a spread sheet for me on last years payouts. Both my friend and I discovered numerous bookings where airbnb failed to collect cleaning fee.. for me a total of $4000. My friend had only a fee, much rarer hosting, and she settled w/ airbnb for half of them as airbnb was so difficult to deal with. I am not willing to do that. I have been trying to find someone at airbnb who is in charge of payouts. I want someone higher up. does anyone know who that would be? Thanks, Joyce Garrity host of the orange house, the down home, urban cottage, seattle

Horrible Airbnb Guests

My husband and I put our condo up on AirBNB and we VERY disappointed with the customer service. We had our place rents twice. The first couple were really friendly and left the apartment clean and as they found it. The second set of guys did not. Fair enough, we did put a large deposit to cover any problems – these students used our place to party even though we said no to parties. When we went to get the keys back there were 3 more guys there than what the booking stated. The left towels with stains in it on the bathroom floor like a hotel, put our wooden placemats in the sink and somehow chipped our floor!!! We contacted airbnb right away and received a notice saying it will take 48 hrs for them to respond – it has been ONE week and no one had contacted. Really disappointed. This has turned into a hassle more than a gain of extra cash!

I would never put my place up on airbnb nor would I use their service. This company has terrible customer service. We need to spread the word so people don’t get scammed into thinking its safe, trustworthy, and reliable. Horrible company.

Alternatives to Airbnb?

My friends and I went to Vegas a few weeks ago and tried to save a few bucks by staying at an airbnb place just off the strip. Long story short, the place was terrible! It was dirty, smelly, didn’t really look like the pictures… just awful. Long story short we filed a claim with Airbnb to get our money back, but it’s been over 2 weeks and we still haven’t heard anything back except a standard bs form email saying that they received the complaint. So annoying!

My question is: Are there any good alternatives to airbnb that treat their customers better? I realize there are always hotels, and that’s fine… but surely there is someone else out there running or building a better service than Airbnb’s terrible customer service right?!
